TOPIC
The Evolving Role Of Controllers In Hospitality
This session delves into the transformation of skill requirements for hospitality controllers. This session begins in 1989 with the culmination of an HFTP study seeking to understand what controllers of the future need should know. The 1989 study was outdated within a few years due to the advancement of technology in the workplace. This study was revisited in 2018 by HFTP. COVID nearly immediately shifted the professional landscape though. HFTP recognized the importance of the topic but also identified an oversight in how the questions were being approached and responded to after two rounds of tepid results. Specifically, controllers were mostly responding on current rather than future skills in 1989 and 2018, even though they were asked to be forward-thinking. We therefore embarked on a 2024 version of this study. This approach integrated insights from both controllers and professional futurologists in hospitality. The original aim was to align educational curricula with future industry demands rather than present needs (e.g., HFTP University). The findings have profound implications beyond academia though. Controllers seeking to maintain their effectiveness while mentoring their teams will likely also be interested in the findings. We should begin preparing ourselves and our teams for the challenges of tomorrow. That alone constitutes a paradigm shift.
Justin spent 8 years in hospitality operations prior to moving to academia. His hotel management career began with Starwood and culminated in an AGM role with Hilton. He departed hotel management to further his education, graduating from the University of Guelph (MBA) and Texas A&M University (PhD). He maintains an academic and applied focus in his research and outreach by serving as an Editor for Anatolia, being Global Vice President for HFTP (Hospitality Financial & Technology Professionals), and working with local industry partners through grants and financed projects such as Starbucks, Food Innovation Network, Port of Seattle (i.e. SeaTac Airport), and many more. Justin is particularly passionate about the role of DMOs (Destination Management/Marketing Organizations) and professional associations in guiding business and management disciplines to make communities better places to live, work, and play. His research areas of emphasis are market-based socio-cultural conservation and negotiation theory. His research is highlighted by projects he has completed in South Korea, Peru, Costa Rica, Canada (e.g. Quebec, Toronto), USA (e.g. Myrtle Beach, Lake Travis), Ireland, Brazil, Bolivia, Kenya, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Turks & Caicos, Montenegro, numerous projects in Texas and Washington (i.e., the two states he has lived/worked in extensively), and more.
